This week's 20 questions

Posted: Thursday, October 11, 2007 9:28 PM

Amazed that Florida State wasn’t able to exact any revenge on Wake Forest tonight -- for last year’s embarrassing 30-0 debacle in Tallahassee -- I’m here to pose this week’s 20 questions:

In the year of the upset, what in the world is next? Is Ohio State nervous about Kent State this Saturday? (Not likely.) How about Louisiana Tech over LSU on Nov. 10? (Don’t think so.) Perhaps Duke can win at Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 17? (Stranger things have happened.) Or maybe Cal will get beat at Stanford in the next edition of the wacky “Big Game” on Dec. 1? (That would actually be an appropriate end to the 2007 regular season.)

If you have a $2 million-a-year contract that runs through 2012, would you find it necessary to dream up a cockamamie newsletter scheme to make $37,806? Wouldn’t you do everything possible not to screw up a cushy gig like that?

Even though it goes against the unwritten rule of “not losing your position due to injury,” wasn’t Jim Harbaugh’s decision to go with miracle-man Tavita Pritchard over T.C. Ostrander actually a no-brainer?

Is 5-0 UConn ready to shift gears from the easy part of its schedule (Duke, Maine, Temple, Pitt and Akron) to the hard part (Virginia, Louisville, South Florida, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Syracuse and West Virginia)? Okay, the Huskies do get to play the Orange at home, but still, don’t you think that they’ll have a tough time finishing above .500?

Has anyone noticed that only one of the 13 teams in the MAC (Bowling Green at a modest 3-2) has a winning record?

Even though there are lots of big numbers floating around in college football these days, don’t you think that Michael Crabtree’s statistics are probably the most impressive? Isn’t it amazing that opposing defenses haven’t come up with a way to at least slow down the redshirt freshman yet?

In terms of performances from the sidelines, has anyone coached better or backed it up better than Les Miles this season?

If you’re a North Carolina fan, aren’t you wondering why “basketball schools” like Kentucky and Kansas, and even Cincinnati and Indiana, can get it done, while the Tar Heels can’t ever seem to get going?

How many years ago was it that Kirk Ferentz was among the hottest commodities in the nation? And not soon after that, wasn’t Ron Zook being vilified? Is Saturday’s Illinois-Iowa game the official changing of the guard? And what do you make of Gary Barta’s vote of confidence for the Big Ten’s highest paid coach?

Can you believe that USC is 5-3 in its last eight Pac-10 games?

It would be really funny next year if Sam McGuffie at Michigan ran for over 2000 yards as a freshman and not get the Heismen Trophy. I do know one thing, Tebow won't get it again. Michigan exposed him for what he is. A big oaf who should stay in the pocket and not run. Maybe a tight end would be better suited for him.
