Who's No. 1 . . . coach?

Posted: Monday, November 26, 2007 9:47 AM

In what has been the wackiest of wacky seasons in college football, at least a couple dozen coaches should be recognized for truly outstanding work. But there is only one “Coach of the Year” and that competition might be the toughest to call.

Playoffs? We're talking about playoffs

Posted: Thursday, November 22, 2007 10:13 AM

Calls for a playoff system are a constant refrain in the world of college football and they only figure to get louder as this wild 2007 season nears its end.

Only two teams will get their shot at that coveted crystal football. Perhaps a couple more schools will cry foul and contend that they were wrongly denied access to the BCS national championship game. All the while, others will complain about not receiving invites to the big bowls and fans will quarrel over the matchups and how they were made. CONTINUED >>

Next 'rule' to fall: A sophomore can't win Heisman

Posted: Friday, November 16, 2007 5:14 PM

With Kansas in line to make a run at the national championship and Notre Dame set for a 60-minute battle with Duke, this disorderly season has been all about breaking what were “the rules.”

So, it figures that this would be the year that the Heisman Trophy breaks away from its stodgy formulaic past and begins to take steps toward truly becoming what it says it is. Awarded annually to the nation’s “most outstanding college football player,” the Heisman has a history of being a lot more selective than that. CONTINUED >>

Thanks to Juice Williams and Ron Zook, the various possibilities for the BCS Championship Game have come into clearer focus. There are still several ways that this could end up, but the following is a rundown of the five most likely matchups for Jan. 7. CONTINUED >>

Who's copying who? Too much harmony in human polls

Posted: Saturday, November 10, 2007 2:08 AM

In the midst of this turbulent college football season, there has been no shortage of bickering, bashing, complaints and controversies. But surprisingly, there’s a great deal of harmony among the human polls. All three of them are marching in synchronized step with each other.

This week, the Associated Press Poll and the Harris Interactive Poll share the same exact composition of 25 teams. In fact, 14 of them, including the first nine, occupy the same position in both polls. Three teams differ by only one spot and six more are separated by just two.

If not for Penn State’s inclusion at No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, all three human rankings would contain the same 25 schools.

Don't we need more bowl games?

Posted: Tuesday, November 06, 2007 12:25 PM

While trying to figure out what Tom Osborne is waiting for, I’m here to pose this week’s 20 questions:

After so much chaos, wouldn’t it be amazing if the Heisman Trophy ended up in the hands of the guy who was at the top of the list at the beginning of the season … Mr. Darren McFadden? And how about breaking off a little piece of it for his running mate Felix Jones?

More disappointment for Ducks?

Posted: Sunday, November 04, 2007 11:38 PM

With a month to go, the BCS is its usual mishmash. More often than not, however, the process works itself out. In the past nine seasons, the top two teams in the coaches poll have met in the “national championship game” six times.

But this season has been so wacky that it seems safe to assume that the teams selected to play for the BCS title will be called into serious question, whether or not they match the polls.

As many as four teams could end up making a legitimate claim at being in the top two.

That has got to be making the folks in Eugene pretty edgy these days. After all, they’ve already been burned by the BCS twice before.

Pats-Colts? Give me college football instead

Posted: Friday, November 02, 2007 12:32 AM

With the entire hubbub surrounding Sunday’s showdown between the Patriots and Colts, we were reminded of yet another reason why college football is superior to the NFL.

What really does the New England-Indianapolis game mean? Sure, one club will fall from the ranks of the undefeated, leaving only the other. Of course, it will be interesting to watch Peyton Manning and Tom Brady battle it out. But what does the game really mean in the grand scheme? Won’t they eventually play again to determine who goes to and wins the Super Bowl … just like they did last year? CONTINUED >>
