LSU, OU most worthy of title game

Posted: Sunday, December 02, 2007 1:27 AM

We should have seen this coming.  But at the same time, we’ve been expecting the madness to subside. It obviously hasn’t and the 2007 season has been a constant downpour of shockers and shakeups.

Now, after 14 erratic weeks of college football, we’re left with a virtual free-for-all.  On Sunday, the combination of computers and pollsters will spit out the names of two teams that will play for the BCS title on Jan. 7, but it’ll be far from definitive … and highly controversial.

There are a handful of worthy candidate, perhaps even as many as seven, but only two will get invited to the championship bout in the Superdome.

LSU will probably rise way up from No. 7 to lockup one of those two spots … and rightfully so.

The champion of the SEC, the toughest conference in the country, should always receive prime consideration for the title game. Both of LSU’s losses came in triple-overtime, which means that the Tigers are pretty much the closest thing we’ve got to an undefeated team this side of the Hawaiian Islands.

LSU should be matched up against Big 12 champion Oklahoma, which dismantled No. 1 Missouri, 38-17, on Saturday. Champions of another league that proved itself this season, the Sooners did lose two conference games, but both were on the road and somewhat explainable (fluky late turnover at Colorado, quarterback Sam Bradford hurt early at Texas Tech).

A Tiger-Sooner showdown in New Orleans would leave five teams on the outside looking in, but they really only have themselves to blame.

One of those hopefuls is Georgia, which began the week at No. 4 in the BCS Standings. But the Bulldogs aren’t conference champions and didn’t even win the SEC East.

The same can be said of Kansas, which was No. 5 this week and not a participant in the Big 12 Championship Game.

(The BCS really ought to adopt a new rule that requires the title game participants be conference champions.  A travesty like the one that occurred in 2001 when Nebraska got the nod over Big 12 champion Colorado and Pac-10 champion Oregon needs to be avoided at all costs.  The Cornhuskers, who lost to the Buffaloes, 62-36, on the final weekend of the regular season and didn’t even participate in the Big 12 Championship Game, got routed by Miami, 37-14, in what was a hollow national title contest.)

Another worthy candidate is Virginia Tech, but the Hokies lost to LSU, 48-7, earlier this season. Yes, that was in Week 2 and Virginia Tech is a vastly improved squad at the current time.  However, head-to-head comparisons should count for something when they are available.

How about Ohio State? Well, when your most impressive victory outside Big Ten play was against four-win Washington, you must go undefeated in that conference. The Buckeyes did not.

Others will make a case for USC, which is playing as well as anyone right now, particularly defensively. But when you blow a game to a 41-point underdog, all your legs to stand on go with it.

you must be high or something with no consideration to Ohio State; are you that biaed for LSU; 1) they got lucky against Tennesee and 2) they should have lost two other games that they luckily pulled out at the end' so take that # 7 ranking and be realistic and know it trook OSU for everyone above them to lose so why should LSU jump that high; my world I think you're crazy
I'm not going to say that USC was robed because they did not show up to play against Stanford, but C'Mon..LSU? They don't deserve it either.
Why not give it to some other undeserving team that can sell tickets in New Orleans like Notre Dame?
I totally agree with you.  Ohio State sat at home this weekend and still gets rewarded.
If the BCS should adopt a rule that you must win your conference championship to play for the National Championship, every team should have to have a conference championship game.  LSU had an extra game to log another win that Georgia did not get the chance to play.  If the SEC were played like the Big Ten Georgia would have received another game, and with a win, tied LSU for a share of the SEC.
Couldn't agree more. Although OSU being their is questionable. Don't play during two polls and go from #5 to #1. And Mizzou with no BCS? OOPs....
This debate can go on forever.  But unless the NCAA puts together some sort of playoff system, we will never have a "true" national champion.
Why has nobody brought up OU's out of conference schedule?  Several people have mentioned OSU's "cream puff" ooc schedule, when OU's consists of North Texas, Miami and Utah State.
Your boss should fire you, turn you in to imigration and maybe even to the alien review board, as your comment about OSU is utterly out of this world!!  How can you continue to be a "Sports" guy for a column or any other form of media, when you are unbelievably biased against the Big Ten.  Did you lose money in Vegas last year on the Buckeyes?  Your boss should check this out, follow the money with you, because you are utterly disgusting!  John Tamanaha, YOU are the kind of person who is all about himself, How much did you and Brent Musberger lose????  Any chance the Big Ten could simply reimburse you for your losses, and you could stop your hostilities???  I also wonder how much money you take from the SEC...( By the way, I don't think they are good enough to beat the Buckeyes)  I'll say it OSU 31- LSU 20  Wanna make a bet Tamanaha???  We'll switch jobs for a day for the bet.... On second thought, I'd have to train you.....nevermind!
Hey, one more thing.......If LSU didn't have a conferance championship game.......where would they be ranked????   Ahhhh............so thats the scam!  Use the fact of a greedy SEC, complain about the extra game if the SEC doesn't get in, Use it to get in.......Pass me my cake, I wanna eat it to!  The SEC is an absolute joke, just go off and have your own "Red-Neck" Bowl!  Easier to see now how "W" got elected!  The Good Ole Southerners are brilliant!
The Buckeyes played 12 games.  Our climate here is a bit colder than the SEC. The big Ten teams do not have off weeks.  The SEC has a championship game purely motivated by greed, and they would not have LSU in the NC without that game this year. PERIOD!
Maybe the big ten should take 3 weeks off in the middle of the season, and then play 3 weeks longer at the end, after the SEC is done.  This way we can climb and the SEC will just get passed up.........sound fair?  Morons!
Yes, OU lost to two teams that were unranked. However, both of those teams are in Bowl Games (CU vs Bama, TTU vs UVA)Someone from Nebraska had the nerve to call Colorado "horrible!" Then what in the world was Nebraska this season? I think that the Buffs and Red Raiders will win thier Bowl games and show that the Big 12 is strong all around. As for my beloved Sooners, the task at hand is clear...Destroy WVU and hope for a split poll. BOOMER SOONER!
I have no idea what some of you people are thinking.  LSU lost to two teams that have legit Heisman candidates, one of which was ranked at the time...and both of which finished the season with winning records.  Oh yeah, Dorsey was also hurt during the Ark game.

They beat(barely or not, a win is a win) four teams that finished in the top 25, including #3 Va. Teach by 41!!!

No one, I repeat, No one has that kind of resume'.

USC and Okla are the only teams that have legitimate gripes about being snubbed.  But when you have a loss to Stanford or two losses to Colorado and T Tech, then the fact that you're not in the champ game is your fault, not the voters.
Wow. It seems amazing to me that a writer for a national news organization could have this kind of bias. The polls worked out the way they did. OSU may have sat idle but it is certainly not their fault if everyone ahead of them cannot run the table! OSU did what it needed to do and that was beat Mich. It was up to the rest of the country to win out and that wasn't accomplished. I say OSU deserves to be right where they are. A 1 loss team that is going to the NC!!!
LSU played powerhouses like Tulane, Gardner Webb, and Middle Tennessee State, lost to unranked Arkansas, and could have easily lost to Tennessee.  So what is it again that makes them so special?
To Jeff in Ft. Myers -- LSU beat Virginia Tech by 41. Sub-.500 team? Check your facts, man. As far Hawaii is concerned, I can think of 116 reasons they should not be considered for a championship -- that's the number of teams with tougher schedules out of 119. Stick to the Islands, guys. Charleston Southern may be in the Southeast, but they ain't in the Southeastern Conference.
Oklahoma matured as the season went on. What do you expect from a freshman QB? He only set the NCAA record for TD's for a freshman and accuracy. The OU defense can play D when they are motivated. Don't worry they will be back next year with a seasoned QB, an experienced line that averages 6'6' 352 Lbs! And Demarco Murray a running back compared to Peterson. And Stoops will make sure that Dfense shuts everyone down. Notes for you other posters. LSU barely beat OU in the Sugar Bowl, They ended the game 14-7 on the LSU 15 yard line, your lucky to get that win. The Heisman Trophy QB had a broken hand! As for USC they are likely to forfeit their NC in about 6 months when his former agent finishes telling all about how he set Reggie Bush and family up! Bottom line...OU was the hottest team in football at the end of the season. THE ONLY reason we are not there is because the record setting freshman got a concussion on the first drive of the Tech game and he was out. We still almost came back and tied the game with the backup. OU deserves to be there but you are lucky they are not. Ohio State will get beat by LSU defense in the end. The one thing I have seen from LSU in the 3-4 games is they NEVER give up and they were always coming from behind.
First, OU did not get "blown out of the building" when they played LSU, the lost by 7 to what was basically a home game for LSU.  Unfortunately, I hate to say it but Ohio St should play in the NC game.  Their schedule was not tough, but every other team in the country have had the chance and have blown it.  Hawaii...schedule somebody, you can't play the 112th worst schedule and expect to be considered legitimate.  Quit whining, even with the weak schedule you got a BCS bowl so take it and be happy and remember to schedule someone in the future, then go undefeated.  LSU lost AT HOME their last game of the season, USC lost AT HOME to Stan, Stan something.  OU lost on the road to a weak (but bowl eligible) CU team on the road.  Tough call...my opinion...Georgia vs. Ohio St.  How do the voters vote Georgia #4 in the country, (ahead of LSU and Tenn) going into the SEC champ game knowing they aren't playing in it?  Thats ridiculous.  Only proves the BCS has major problems, and the voters are a big part of it.
Oklahoma got blown out by LSU? What game were you watching? The final score was 21-14 LSU wins. OU had the ball late in the 4th and drove deep into LSU territory. They were running the ball straight at a very exhausted LSU defense. Suddenly, the OU coaches decided to pass the ball into the endzone (bad decision on their part). Jason White barely overthrew a wide open Kejuan Jones for the tying score. Had Kejuan caught that ball or had the OU coaches kept running the ball against that exhausted LSU Defense, OU would have taken that game into overtime. That isn't getting blown out to me. You must have a different definition of the phrase than I do.
What a whacky college football season. LSU looses their next to last game and make the championship game? When has that ever happened. I do believe they deserve to be there, but not Ohio State. What is Ohio State's record against SEC teams? Can you say OH for 8? OH, go ahead and make it OH for 9. LSU will crush them.

I think Oklahoma would have made a better opponent.
Yes Oklahoma and the facts -  OU did NOT get blown out by LSU.  It was a narrow defeat with OU in scoring position twice. OU QB Jason White, playing injured, overthrow an open receiver in the end zone & overthrow a wide open receiver close to the end zone.  Either strike on either drive would have won the game.  Also remember LSU was playing a home game which is something that should NEVER be allowed in a national championship game!!!!!  By the way, LSU lost at home this year and barely won 2 other games in the final minute.  No way they should get another home game this year for the national championship again!!!!!
Too funny.  No one, absolutely no one, thinks OSU will beat LSU, except of course, OSU fans. Hmmmmm. Come January we'll see how many posts about how good OSU is are made. What I fully expect is a bunch of lame excuses being posted as to why OSU got blown out again. Less than a month to go before OSU is made the laughing stock of college football, again.
It doesn't matter that LSU barely beat Tennessee.  THEY WON...

If not them, who?  OU lost to two unranked teams also...the difference being LSU lost to a team that was ranked at the time and both teams feature Heisman candidates, including one finalist.

OU lost to Tech and Colorado of all people.
From Robert Van Peer on 12/2: The last time Oklahoma played LSU in New Orleans they got totally blown out of the building,

Really? 7 points constitutes a blowout? Must be some kinda California math...
Stanford beat Cal too,,,something "mighty" Tennessee couldn't do!
Make no mistake, although the BCS may seem flawed, the two "best teams" were chosen out of a group that seemed to "not want it bad enough" to win the game that would have PUT them in the BCSC Game? Georgia? Didn't even win the SEC East..LSU beat the same TN Team that "whipped" up on them earlier. The SEC is the hardest conference to win, week in and week out. Although previous year's have seen some good Big 12 Teams, my vote goes to Big 12 for teams that would give SEC teams a run for their money. OU or LSU should be able to clean OSU's clock...OU will be tested with WVU...talk to Georgia about that one. We'll see 1/3/08 & then 1/7/08.
Oklahoma was not "blown out of the stadium" by LSU we lost 21-14 and actually dominated the second half. LSU didn't score an offensive TD in that half and we were a 4th and goal from tying it. Hardly a blow out.
I love the short memories of football fans. Last year the Big 10 stunk up the bowl season. This was the fluke. In recent years the Big 10 has been pretty Bowl dominent. schedules are made years in advance so sometimes a team that is strong can be in a cupcake year. Notre Dame anyone? Tim Tebow won many awards by running up stats against teams like "Western Kentucky", "Troy", Florida Atlantic, and even Florida Stae which is in a cupcake year. The SEC is no stronger then any other conference. A conference championship game is just hype. It doesn't matter if your conference is decided by a game or conference record. It is a BCS Championship game because it is BCS schools. If Hawaii wants in a BCS championship game then they need to get out of their cupcake conference. Appalachian State was never a cupcake. They have been recent perenial National Champions in their own right.
Well I know I am gonna get bashed for this one just because I am an Ohio State fan, but lets face it guys the BCS has been a joke since day one and the only National Championship games it produced that I thought were well picked was Miami vs OSU and USC vs Texas. Two really great games. Honestly I know they wouldn't likely win but Hawaii has more right than anyone in the nation to play in the championship game. Yea they play in the WAC but hopefully you all remember Boise State's exciting win last year (They were national Champs in my opinion.) Records should come first, and if you play an extra game then you should be griping to your conference commisioners who wanted more money from a conference title game. It is only one game anyway and if you can't win it then what right do you have to play for a national title. I really wish it would be a #1 Hawaii vs a #2 Ohio State. Hell Hawaii could have pulled off an upset and left all us buckey fans feeling like Sooner fans from last year.
LSU isnt playing OU. BCS computers blew it, alomg with the coaches poll. Media poll doesn't mean a flipping thing. OU never gets the credit it deserves, as it is a winner year in, year out. It plays a lot of freshmen right away. Some teams wish they could. Go Sooners!
I guess last nights game and todays polls settled most of the arguments. Too bad Georgia or LSU didn't get to play USC.
John in Dallas wrote: "LSU does NOT deserve to go to the Championship game, OU proved that they are the team to beat. "

I hope you watched the game last night, hoss. OU is all hat and NO CATTLE!
I am a big SEC Fan. Growing up in the Dirty South,
( for those who don't know, the Dirty South Is The Great State of Georgia)where football is not everything in sports, but the only thing when it comes to sports. Its a way of life.

It is some serious big business from the High School Level thru College to the NFL. While some people may think that it is only entertainment, others will say that is by far more than you could ever imagine.

Football brings millions of dollars to the Schools. For example, in high schools, new equipment to the schools, new materials for higher learning, better programs.

The High School I graduated from in 1978 was built in 1973. This School at that time, had carpeting in every single classroom including the cafeteria and bathrooms. We had sections in the school for different academic curriculums such as the A- Section. That section was for English, Spanish, French, Latin,German, and Russian. The B Section was for Sciences such as Physical Science, General Science, Physics, Biology etc. The C section was for Business courses such as Typing. The D Section was for Journalism and Art. The E Section was for Social Sciences, Goverment, History, General Math, Consumers Math, Algerbra, Pre- Calculas, Calculas, Trigometry, and Geometry. The F Section was for Home Economics and day care. The G Section was for Electro Mechanics where they fix Air conditioners refridgerators etc, General Industrial Arts for Wood Working, Agriculture etc. The H Section was for Paramedics. The I Section was for Industrial Arts Construction where they built the School Baseball Diamond, The School parking Lot. Metal Works where they train students how to weld. Auto Mechanics where they trian students how to fix automobiles. The J Section was for Fine Arts such as Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, and Chorus. The K Section was for PE for Students, and PE for Athletes. The Gym was very modern where they had Rubber Gym Floors Modern Score Boards etc. To include Glass Library, Glass Principal and Vice Princiapl Offices. Now days there are customary in schools.

But this is what I mean about big business. The SEC by far is the  most strongest Conference in the NCAA Football today. The SEC Strength of Schedule far exceeds any other Conference in College Football today.

For those who don't agree, as far as I can remember, for years there have been at least three SEC Schools in the TOP 10 Rankings in the Pre-Season, and ending in the Post Season Rankings.

Let's be real here. LSU deserves to be Number 1 for the brutal beating they have given to the Ohio State Buckeyes. But I must say that the BCS Ranjking is very flawed, and I truly agree with UGA President Adams in recommending the start of a play off system.

We all know that the current system does not work. The reason behind this is Bowl Money that goes to  certain schools. Its all about the Money instead of fairness. The AP Poll, Coaches Poll, and the BCS had UGA Ranked at NO 4 in the Rankings behind WVU, Missouri, and OSU. When WVU LOST, and Missouri Lost, OSU should have moved to NO 1 along with UGA moving to No 2 to play each other for the National Title.

However; the media got into it such as ESPN sports announcers. The gripe was that Georgia did'nt win the SEC Conference, and they Lost to Tennessee. Then they had No 7 LSU move to No 2 skipping over UGA to play OSU. Well for the record, everyone knows that the Big 10 does not have a conference championship anyway, and in previous years the Oklahoma Sooners went there and they didnt win their conference championship.

If that was the case, then why move UGA to NO 4 in the first place? This was, and everyone knows that this was a travesty of justice and a manipulation of college sports. It was very unfair. Then they saw fit to match UGA with Hawaii whom they bragged about saying that how tough Hawaii was by them beating every team in tere conference leaving them undefeated.

Now UGA played undefeated Hawaii and Beat the day lights out of them 41-10. They said it themselves that they were out manned out played, and out coached. How fast and how strong the UGA Bulldogs players are. Now everyone knows that UGA should have been there to ROUT OSU Just like LSU Did.

Lets see OSU... 9 appearances against SEC Schools, and 9 Loses. Hmmmm. I concur with the reccommendation of UGA President Adams that a play off system be put in place. Let the Bowl Sponsors have their day for the BCS. Put those BCS Bowls in Play Off Bracketts. But also have a undisputed Bowl to determine the NCAA National Champion.

If Division 1-AA Division II Division III and the NFL could have one, then the NCAA Division I Need to have it too. GO Georgia Bulldogs.
I have to agree with you eric. Georgia might well have been the best team in the country at the end of the season. Could they have beaten USC? Could they beaten a well rest and healed LSU team? We will never know until there is a playoff system.
